GA Celebrates MLK Day of Service

What a day! Germantown Academy’s 21st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service was full of good will and school spirit. More than 250 students, employees, and parents/guardians gathered to make 200 cupcakes and 30 pounds of baked ziti for Manna on Main, filled 25 bags of donated clothing to Mattie Dixon, The Wardrobe, and Cradles to Crayons, and donated six boxes of children’s winter accessories to St. Christopher’s Hospital. Participants made 20 no-sew blankets for the Ambler Senior Center, 100 toiletry bags and winter kits for the Salvation Army, and 125 snack bags for the Philadelphia VA Hospital. GA was also able to provide 25 peace and smile boxes, 50 morning munchie bags, 30 boxes of feminine hygiene products to No More Secrets, 100 snack rolls to The Giving Tree, and two very full boxes of cat and dog toys for Home at Last Rescue, Tiny Miracles, and Bubba's Station. The GA community was also very generous with their donations of gift cards and items.

We would also like to thank our guest speaker, the Honorable Charles Hayden, a long-time member of the Philadelphia Municipal Court, for an important and poignant speech about his life and U.S. civil rights as this MLK Day is the 60th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Kudos to Max Toren '25 for introducing him. Special thanks to the team of CSO Coordinators Anthony Commale, Sherri Retif, Ellen McMichael, Bob Moyer 1760, and Colleen Rivers, along with Parents’ Committee Chair Tori Cain and her team, Lyn Truszkowski, Jenaye Munford, Grace Parker, Erin von Zuben, Mandi Rollerson, and Anya Goodman, and all of the drivers and student activity leaders for an engaging and wonderful event.
